The Rockingham Fine Arts Association (RFAA) and 2020 Artist-in-Residence committee (A-i-R 2020) collaborated to create the Artist-in-Residence program with the goal of bringing professional artists to the Harrisonburg and Rockingham communities by offering community-based residencies. Through a juried process which considered literary, performing and visual artist nominations, two applicants were selected. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the indefinite postponement, only one artist, James Williams II will be participating when we resume the residency, once it is deemed safe to gather and collaborate with the community again.
The A-i-R 2020 committee mission is to support artists in areas of education, production, sabbatical and collaboration, creating connections and building networks between local artists and arts organizations, and the broader Harrisonburg and Rockingham communities. This mission underscores the committee’s goals to enrich the community’s vitality by expanding access to a wider variety of artists and artistic events; to provide artists a safe and supportive space to develop projects individually and/or explore new approaches with local partners; and to expand the network and reach of area artists by fostering collaborative possibilities with the visiting artists.
The A-i-R 2020 committee members included: Don Albright, Earlynn Miller, Lauren K. Alleyne, and Karen Robertson
