On October 2nd, young aspiring artists were introduced and paired up with local, active artists at Spitzer Art Center. The pairs will soon begin working toward the extremely unique concept, Wonderkitten! Wonderkitten is a portrait show in it's second year, that pairs local children and local artists together to create a portrait of each other. Created by the cofounders of Art Lotto, Denise Kanter Allen and Brandy Somers, this show encourage the child-adult pairs to meet throughout the months of October and November to collaborate and share ideas that will culminate in an art show.
At this preliminary meeting, the assortments of coffee were just as unique as the artists that filled Spitzer Art Center. Special thanks to Bowl of Good and Lucas Roasting Company for providing delicious soups, wraps, sweet treats and aromatic gift bags of coffee during the event. The Wonderkitten First Friday Opening Reception will take place December 5, 2014 from 5-8pm at Larkin Arts! Come see what our pairs create in a gallery and enjoy refreshments and live music! During the month of October, Spitzer Art Center is exhibiting Elaine Hurst's That's My Dog! These paintings are all unique, with different color schemes and landscapes, but all have one thing in common: the admiration, loyalty and love of dogs. Artist Statement: "Artists look at the world around us in a unique way. I have always looked at the my world through an artist’s lens. I see the shapes and colors that make up our everyday lives. I watch the way light changes things, many times within a blink of an eye. I embrace the way that colors interact and what that interaction does to my senses. These are some of the things that I try to bring to my paintings. Through training, workshops, classes, advanced learning, and a lot of time spent at the easel, I feel that I am getting a glimpse of how I want to paint, and what it means to be an artist. It isn't something that you become. It is something that you continue to learn and work on. It isn't for the faint of heart, but rather it is about the process of learning skills, how to see, and how to feel, like an artist." A Night to RememberFriday, Febrary 7th, marked the beginning of a colorful transformation at Spitzer Art Center! The downstairs was covered by cloth rainbows of exotic colors and patterns. As I walked around and viewed the entirety of the exhibit, I had a definite pride in being a part of Spitzer Art Center. I remember feeling that exhibits, like this one, are exactly why Mary Spitzer Etter left her birthplace to Central Shenandoah Arts--to see art, in every form, flourish. Culture by Design, interrogated the origins, cultural exchange and social meanings of the Kanga, an iconic East African cloth. The displays provided a vibrant mix of color and design, photographs and stories narrating both the historical and contemporary significance of the kanga. -curated by Phyllis Ressler, adjunct Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Eastern Mennonite University, James Madison University and Webster University, Geneva Switzerland. The exhibition is based on research collected in collaboration with the National Museums of Kenya, with support from The Royal Netherlands Embassy, The Embassy of Switzerland, The Aga Khan Trust for Culture, The British Museum and Webster University. Spitzer Art Center would like to give thanks to Bowl of Good for their donation of delicously global food for this unique event. We certainly hope to see you at our next First Fridays event!
