The show featured this month was titled "6x6x30". The host and creator of the show Ashley Sauder-Miller, proposed the idea of 30 days of art work, each displayed on a 6x6 canvas. A call to local artists was made and the work began to flow in! A total of 750 pieces of art work were submitted! That's an impressive number and a lot of work! Below you will find a list of contributing artists for the 6x6x30.

All art works will be on display throughout the month of March at Spitzer Art Center. Spitzer Art Center is located at 486 W. Market St. Harrisonburg, VA. Our gallery hours are every Saturday from 10:00a-2:00p. *All content and photographs in this post have been provided courtesy of Danielle Campbell Photography For first Friday this month, our gallery featured unique works by over 29 local artists and writers. The concept of the show was an idea that Angela Carter had over a year ago: to unite writing and visual arts. After proposing the idea to Danielle Campbell and naming the show, the idea was born. Angela and Danielle held a call for artists and were so proud of all of the work that was submitted over the course of two dates for entry. Following this, the (volunteer!) judging took place by four incredibly talented artists and writers. They spent hours reading every piece and using their experience to properly and accurately judge the art work itself. Almost all pieces were accepted to the show! Angela and Danielle were truly moved by the talents of these new artists! Below are the criteria and rules for submitting: 1. Write an original poem or short prose piece (any style/subject) 2. Use any medium to display/frame/decorate your words, and/or the space around them. 3. Beginners are encouraged to submit! There were people from every walk of life in art and writing at this show, and it could not have been more positive! We even had live music by Blake Cramer of Shenandoah Alley! The opening had an astounding amount of people from the public and those who were friends/family of the artists themselves. It was lovely to have so many come to see and celebrate art of every medium and the artists themselves! The majority of submissions were NEW artists! Here is a link to the top three winners: (who were featured in Worst Week Ever magazine) Worst Week Ever, Issue 13. Votes were placed by the audience and tallied during the opening. The Audience Choice Award went to a NEW, upcoming artist, C. James Dawson with his piece titled Ashes. All content and photographs in this post were provided courtesy of Danielle Campbell Photography November's exhibition at Spitzer Art Center is the Juried Portrait Photography Show. This show invited artists to submit work based on a theme of portraiture, without restricting what the theme meant. Photographers and portrait-lovers, of all ages, came out to Spitzer Art Center for First Fridays, November 7, 2014, to view a wide variety of portraits that one photographer called a community of portraits. Forty portraits, from twenty-eight local artists, were chosen out of over eighty artist submissions! The variety and mediums used in the selected pieces were unique, including one 3-D installation of plastic army men! The judges, Vada Kelley, Laura Purvis, Jauan Brooks and Valerie Smith, did not find the judging process an easy task; it took the first judge over two hours to make the difficult decisions regarding which pieces to include in this Juried Show. The show will be on display for the month of November. Gallery hours are each Saturday from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. Local musician, Jeff Gorman, played an acoustic set of soulful music in one of the downstairs gallery rooms, while visitors took in the diverse range of portraits. The Breeze, a local newspaper, featured an article about the event and Spitzer Art Center's outreach to photographers in the area. Coordinators of the juried show, and Spitzer Art Center board members, Brandy Somers and Denise Kanter Allen, were interviewed in the article, along with one of the show's artists, Soula Pefkaros. Portraits by the following artists are on display: Tobias Johnson Angela Marie Carter Anneke Martin Bob Adamek Brandy Somers Brittany Rizika Cara Zimmerman Walton Colleen Kivley Ed Dingman Erin Kling Erin Murray Gayle Hatcher Driver Hannah Kim S Howard Zehr Jennifer Tremblay Jewel Hertzler Katie Schmid Keesha Dickel Laura Weeks Lydia Jacobs Lynda Bostrom Mark Andrew Fenton Noelle Burgess Patricia Drummond Rachel Kauffman Herr Samantha Ritter Soula Pefkaros Tara Ott We look forward to seeing you at Spitzer Art Center!
